Stefan Brüne has been an associate fellow at the DGAP since 2016. He previously worked for the Intergovernmental Authority on Development based in Djibouti; as a guest professor at the Institute for Peace and Security Studies, Addis Ababa University; and as a political advisor for the EU Training Mission Somalia in Mogadishu and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Juba, South Sudan.

Brüne studied political science, history, philosophy, and German at the Universities of Mainz and Marburg. In 1986 he completed his PhD at the Freie Universität Berlin on the topic of underdevelopment and radical military rule in Ethiopia. He worked as a researcher at the Institute for African Studies in Hamburg and as an assistant professor at Universität Osnabrück, in the department of geography and studies on developing countries. In 1993 he became a senior research fellow at Hamburg’s Overseas Institute. In 1995 he completed his Habilitation in social geography and political science at the Universität Osnabrück with a thesis on French policy in Sub-Saharan Africa.

He then worked as a visiting professor at the Universität Osnabrück, the Institut d’Études Politiques de Paris (in Paris and Nancy), the Catholic University Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, Hamburg’s Asia-Africa Institute and College of Europe, and Mekelle University in Ethiopia.

He has worked as a consultant for international organizations (the World Bank, the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, GIZ) on projects with a focus on Africa and Asia.
